6/6-10/2007: Pecos Wilderness, NM

Wednesday night- The boys and I left Dimmitt around 8:30 and arrived at El Porvenir CG a little after midnight. We were greeted by strong winds ripping down off Hermits Peak and the sound of falling trees. Setting up the tent in the dark with winds grabbing the tent from my hands and two wide eyed little boys was an adventure.

Thursday- We awoke to much calmer winds and the sight of downed trees. A ponderosa had fallen within about three feet of the truck. We met my dad at the trailhead around 9:30, loaded up the packs and started up Porvenir Canyon. We proceeded up canyon about 2 miles before setting up camp at an established site next to the creek. The only people we saw were a group on their way back from some trail maintenance.

Friday- Morning dawned to temperatures in the mid 40's and clear skies. We continued north crossing the creek repeatedly as it passed through the narrow confines of the canyon. The forest floor was covered with a variety of wildflowers. Camp was established at the confluence of Hollinger and Beaver Creeks. We encountered one small party headed north on the trail after we set up camp. We traveled about 2.5 miles.

Saturday- The temperature warmed quite fast as the sun rose. We broke camp and turned back to the south. We began encountering more people as we got closer to the trailhead, but the total number was still less than 5 or 6. We traveled a little over 3 miles and set up camp at an established site close to the wilderness boundary. The skies clouded up and we got a little rain during the evening.

Sunday- We woke up, cooked breakfast and explored a small recess in the rock behind our campsite. We encountered three people on our way out and arrived back at the truck around 11.
We had a great trip.

Hi, I don't know how we found your blog, but I am so enthralled by your family adventures! I am having a baby in August and you guys are truly and inspiration to keep exploring. You should write a book about how to keep moving and all the little tricks you use to get your little ones going. I have made the goal to backpack by 2 months with our first little one in August. Wow.
