11/15-18/2007: Big Bend National Park, TX

The five of us loaded up and left Dimmitt Thursday afternoon. We arrived in the Basin campground close to midnight and set up the tent.

Friday morning dawned to clear skies and cool temperatures. We cooked breakfast and headed down to Panther Junction to get our permits. We reserved Terlingua Abajo 2 for Friday night and the Tule Mountain zone for Saturday night.

We drove out to Terlingua Abajo and spent the day relaxing and playing in Terlingua Creek. The day was overcast and brought some intermittent light showers.

Saturday dawned clear and cool. We fixed breakfast, took down our camp and packed the backpacks. We drove out to the Burro Spring trailhead.

Our route began by dropping down into Javelina Wash. We followed this west, enjoying frequent stops for the boys to play. About 1.75 miles into the route we set up the tent . Wyatt and I headed over to Tule Spring to replenish our water supply. We turned in around 8:00.

Sunday, the boys and I headed back over to the spring to fill up again. We cooked breakfast and headed back to the trailhead. We arrived around 1:00 and headed back to Dimmitt.

About Me

Danny Griffis
I'm a father to five young children (with a sixth on the way). I work as a family physician in a small rural hospital in west Texas. We try to get outside to play as much as possible (but with work, church and family this is much less than we like).
