4/18-20/2008: Guadalupe Mountains, NM

Friday- Wyatt, Sabrina and I left Dimmitt around 6:30. Five hours later we drove out onto Big Canyon Ridge where we parked and spent the night in the bed of the truck.

Saturday- We awoke to a temperature of 46 degrees and partly cloudy skies. Around 9:00 we began descending into one of the upper tributaries of Big Canyon. We enjoyed the shady, heavily wooded environs. Good sized ponderosa, southwestern white pine and Douglas fir grew in dense areas throughout the canyon.

Our progress through the canyon was slow. Frequent deadfall and small pouroffs required attention and the natural pace of preschoolers further added to our delay. Around noon we began a difficult 600 vertical foot climb out of the canyons. Helping the kids navigate the maze of agave, sotol, yucca, oakbrush, rock and other obstacles required constant vigilance.

We set up camp on Camp Wilderness Ridge. After a nap we all headed over to gaze across the state line into the national park. Wyatt enjoyed hearing the story of when he and I backpacked into the Mescalero campsite when he was 15 months old. Sabrina wanted to know when she would be able to go.

Sunday- We awoke to high winds and a temperatuer of 48 degrees. I was thankful that we passed up on views and instead had camped in the shelter of the forest. We took down the tent and walked along forest service roads to get back to the truck. we were blessed with complete solitude, beautiful scenery and with the exception of the wind on Sunday perfect weather.
